I am new to keeping chickens--This city girl received 6 hatchlings (3 Barred Rock, 3 Rhode Island Red, all hens) as a "gift" last May. So far so good. They are not as loud as the neighbors teenagers so hopefully no one will report me for keeping them. I am enjoying them--they are hysterical to watch! I allow them to run free for a little while each day, but only when I am out with them--there are four hawks in the neighborhood and I am afraid they are on to us. One of my babies is missing the claws on both middle digits. Is this unusual? Does it indicate some other health issues? Other than that, as far as I can tell, they are healthy and happy.

I have a RIR from Ideal who was hatched with no middle toenails, Rosemary. AND, I hatched a Delaware who was missing those as well. Must not be uncommon. They do fine without them. Rosie sure does.
