I've got 4BO that made a year old today. They all share a huge dog house for a nest box, had another set up, no one was using so removed it. All have been laying since early October last year. The past few days Big Bird decided to lay in the back corner under the nest. It's ok with me but curious as to why she's doing this. These 5 Wyandottes laid together in the nest ...

She decided to protect her eggs, you keep on taking them away. It’s normal, if she thinks it’s safer somewhere else to lay she will. There was also a probability she didn’t want to wait for her turn.

I’ve got Black Copper Marans that keep on moving their laying to different nest boxes every few weeks.

Never thought of that, interesting, I try not let them see me taking the eggs :hmm The 4BO's eggs have individual shapes/color, so it's only that one who does it now & then. The 5 Blue Wyandottes in the pic would all lay together :) that was a sight to see.

I think it’s an instinct to procreate and protect the next generation of their line, otherwise their genetic line or chicken itself will be extinct, LOL.

Mind you I got 14 nesting boxes, no one uses 5 of them for some reason, whereas they used to. Then they will line up and crowd on certain ones and even push each other out. They have an innate safety issues for their eggs ha ha ha. Safety from me eating their “precious” line.

I hear you ... I'm limited to 6 pullets in our residential area. The 5 Wyandottes worked good but when I switched out to the BOs, due to size I have only 4. I prefer keeping an even number/breed, I find they are cliquish.
