Hi I have an buff orpington that is a year old and she is not a regular egg layer. Always misses days and when she does lay an egg is is tiny or irregular shaped. It is rare for her to lay a normal size egg. I have two other hens that are consistent and have regular eggs. They all eat the same food and water and are the same age. Anyone know why? What can be done?

Please make yourself at home and we are here to help. Buff orps are dual purpose breeds. This means they are used for meat and eggs. So, since they aren't known for their eggs as much, you can't expect them to lay super well. But, make sure she has calcium, (if they don't have enough calcium, their eggs will shrink) water and layer feed.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like she has some problems with her egg laying system, do they eggs she does lay contain a regular yolk etc, or is she laying wind eggs? If she has a problem with her ovaries and/or shell gland etc, there may not be much you can do... if the other hens are in good shape and laying nice normal eggs it is probably a problem specific to her, and not to anything you are doing. Some hens are just better layers than others, and as Mountain Peeps mentioned, Orpingtons are more of a duel purpose and pet breed rather than a commercial laying breed.

Welcome to BYC!

I have a hen that is having issues with her laying machine as well. Odd shaped, mishappen eggs, lots of yolks, no shells, etc...Some of these hatchery birds are bred for high production and they can have troubles with laying. There is little you can do other than keep her on a good diet, lots of oyster shell on the side and keep the treats down to a dull roar so she eats a lot of layer feed.

Enjoy your flock and welcome to ours!
