Hi I have an buff orpington that is a year old and she is not a regular egg layer. Always misses days and when she does lay an egg is is tiny or irregular shaped. It is rare for her to lay a normal size egg. I have two other hens that are consistent and have regular eggs. They all eat the same food and water and are the same age. Anyone know why? What can be done?
and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like she has some problems with her egg laying system, do they eggs she does lay contain a regular yolk etc, or is she laying wind eggs? If she has a problem with her ovaries and/or shell gland etc, there may not be much you can do... if the other hens are in good shape and laying nice normal eggs it is probably a problem specific to her, and not to anything you are doing. Some hens are just better layers than others, and as Mountain Peeps mentioned, Orpingtons are more of a duel purpose and pet breed rather than a commercial laying breed.
