In barred breeds, The roosters have two copies of the barring gene, the females one. When Barred Rocks (as an example) are bred, the females can only pass their gene onto their sons, while the males pass it on to both genders. So, a male will receive a copy each from both parents, while the females will only have one copy from their fathers.

With the sex linking, they put (usually) a red rooster over a barred hen. She can only pass her barred gene on to her sons, and never her daughters. The head spot indicates the presence of the barring gene, so at hatch, you can easily tell the males with the head spots from the females without.
