Hen or Drake?

Best way to tell is one of two options

Option 1- look for curled tail feather. if you find it (wont be hard) then its a boy if not a female.

Option 2- Listen to his/her voice. If its a loud QUACK sound which we associate with ducks then its a hen if its a raspy sound it will be a male.

OK, will do. Thanks! At this point, I think he looks like a girl, but talks like a boy.

Definitely a match for the Black Indies duck, I'd have to agree that's sure what he looks like! I read that the females in that breed are a lot smaller than the males.

I'm leaning towards our duck (DW, short for Darkwing..)..is probably a female. I only got to hear the drake clearly once or twice, on the video, but hers is more of a quack than that. Someone told me that ducks will not lay eggs unless they have a mate? And at what age do they begin laying?

They will lay eggs without a drake they just won't be fertile. and usually by 6 months. some start as early as 4, I prefer mine to wait as long as possible so they are more mature.

Good, well that makes sense. Same as chickens, of course. But not having had ducks before, when I heard that, I thought we should make sure. At least, eventually, we will know for sure what DW is.
