Tam'ra of Rainbow Vortex :

That's a tough one.
Look at his/her wings. The first sign my BLRW roos showed was deep red shiny feathers on their shoulders. You may have to pick him/her up and look though the wing/shoulder feathers to find them since they start out small, hidden behind other feathers. I find with this breed those are easier to identify males with than hackles.

We had 2 BLR's that were tough to determine...those little feathers were the giveaway-a very late one

Thank you so much for the comparison picture! That is what the feathers look like on my chickens but not that long yet. I have to really look for them under their other feathers. But they are there, just still in that clearish wrapping stuff they have. I guess I will really find out in a few weeks to see if/when they grow our. Bummer, I really thought that one was a hen, I really honestly did. How old is your roo in that picture? Ugg, I'm sad to think that both of my blues are roos. I was hoping for at least one hen.

What am I going to do with two possibly three roos out of my four babies?

That roo was 8-9 months old. He acted like a hen and never crowed until his saddle feathers came in. He now lives with my friend, since we didn't need another roo.

pick the bird up and have a look at its wings,
difficulty of identifing depends on the breed but:
*if it has one row of feathers it is a guy
*if it has two rows of feathers it is a gal
(there will be a long row and a short row in gals)
usualy it is best doing this with day olds but its worth a try
