Hen or Roo: Barred Rock

We've gotten lots of mixed advice on Pepper, our Barred Rock (about 5 months old). The saddle feathers are supposed to be the best indicator, but what do these indicate?

I'd say you got yourself a young cockerel there. The saddle and hackle feathers look to be that of a rooster. Good looking bird!!

Cockerel for sure. I can tell because of the hackle and saddle feathers, light coloration, and large red comb and wattles. He's a handsome boy!

Definitely a little cockerel; he should be crowing soon (if he isn't already). A pullet Barred Rock would be lighter in color, have less pronounced comb and wattles, and not have the thin, pointed hackle (neck) and saddle (back area) feathers. Pretty bird!
