Hey,

I live in town so can’t have a rooster. I already rehoused one hen that turned out to be a rooster and now this one (Harriet) has become the top/lead hen. She’s super friendly but she’s vocalizing when she wants out and sometimes in the pen (their coop isn’t done yet. It’s not quite a cockadoodledoo but I also haven’t heard loud sounds from any of my girls so maybe it’s normal bossy lead chicken sounds that kinda sound like what my rooster made.

I sent these photos to the hatchery I bought her from when she was a day old, and they said she’s a hen. I’d still love more opinions for those who have hen or roo speckled Sussex chickens. She’s almost 8.5 weeks so I’d like to think I’d be able to tell by now.

All chickens are loud, some being more loud than others. Therefore, listening to whether they are loud or not cannot be a way of sexing chickens.

Hatcheries will almost always say that your chicken is the opposite gender of what it is really is, I have seen that so many times from posts. They do not care if they gave you a cockerel. Getting people from hatcheries to sex your chickens by pictures is not a good way of getting someone to help you anyway, BackYard Chickens will definitely give you a much more accurate answer.

Thanks. I sent pictures to the hatchery because they want pictures to give me a refund if they sent the wrong sex. This hatchery, according to a book I read, has a specific sexing person and I paid for hens. At any rate, I was suspect after I got rid of the other rooster and this one took charge. I can’t have a rooster and my friend who took the other one probably doesn’t want a second one, so what can I do?

What hatchery did you order from?

You could try to rehome via FB, Craigslist, or here.
