Hen or Roo?

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You're SLW looks like a hen to me. New chicken owners do sometimes mistake the singing of a hen for crowing (at least until they hear an actual crow for the first time). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC!:frow We're glad to have you.

Thank you for the nice welcome.
Have you experienced your SLW hens having a red rash on their legs (sides of legs not shanks). I suspect you have SLWs from the username.

Your Silver Laced Wyandotte looks like a pullet to me.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I actually think that is a hen. Her saddle feathers and tail feathers are rounded, her comb is large and red meaning she is close to laying. Pullets at this age generally act bossy especially if they are at the top of the pecking order and there is no rooster around. Is she squatting at all? Singing? If so, she is very close to laying eggs.

I've just been through this with mine, 4 of 6 are roosters! I think you have a pullet about to lay if the comb and wattle have only just got bigger and redder. I used the tips on this site to confirm my roosters, the neck (hackle) feathers were the give away and the folks here agreed. They are younger than yours though. Thankfully my family are on farms so they had somewhere to go

This is the photo that raised suspicion

At only 12 weeks old it's obvious that there are 3 roosters and a pullet in the picture. Yours are twice that age.
Hope that helps!!

Sometimes after they have been laying, they get nicer. You can hope for that. Does look like a pullet to me - maybe she has pms - and an egg or two will straighten out her hormones
