We have 4 buff Orpingtons and they are all 4 months old. One of them has a lager crown and gobble. We think she maybe a rooster, but this is our first flock so we have no idea. We haven’t heard a rooster crow from any of the them.
The first 2 photos are the chicken we think is rooster. The others are the rest of the chickens.

At 16 weeks, they are pullets near point of lay. They will be laying eggs soon. The one with the largest comb will most likely lay first.

Her comb isn’t very red, and clucking isn’t a sign of a roo.

I think that first pic is a rooster for sure. As it gets a little older he should start getting big tail feathers going down his side and tail. Roos start to crow(terribly at first) at about 8 mths maybe 7 months. Just as th girls are ready to start laying eggs at about 8 mths too. I have a way of telling what sex my chicks are at about 4 weeks...the roos have started to grow their tail feathers and th girls tails have not grown at all by that age. And as they get to about 4 or 5 months th girls tails stick straight up(as in th last pic, straight up) and th roos tails start dropping down to allow th roos long roo feathers to come in. It worked for my last 3 batches of chicks. I worked out I had 3 roos out of 7 babies....and i was correct. Time to cull a couple of roos for me now. For future reference, you dont want more than 2 roos in a flock of about 12 to 18 chickens. One may get picked on til it dies. I had that happen last year. They are beautiful looking chickens, i like their colours. Good luck.

I have lavender and chocolate Orpingtons. At 12 weeks old I knew who the cockerels out of the bunch. I’m a first time chicken mama as well. One chocolate actually started crowing so I compared his tail, waddle and combs to others. It was then that I was certain that I had more Roos than than my flock could handle, never mind the neighbors. I ended up returning 7 to the local farm where I had purchased them. The breeder convinced me that 2 of them were pullets so I brought them back home. Guess what? This guy is definitely a cockerel, he started crowing last night. His behavior is so obvious at now 13 weeks old. I’m in love with him but he has to go back to the chicken farm. I’m thinking based on your pics and the age of the chick that you may have a cockerel as well. Give it time and you will definitely hear that very distinctive crow. Good Luck!
