Deff what the one said earlier about posting a pic around 4-6 weeks,
I would watch how this one behaves around the others.. does it stand taller - like it always needs to be the tallest, watch for that. Looking back on mine when they were young. Every roo so far spent most of the time standing a lot straighter and taller than the others, where as the hens kinda stand with more of a relaxed neck. Not a good way of describing it, but if the group gets startled or something after they run around like crazy for a bit after that they will all be at attention, That look is my "Roo give away stance"
Either way it will give you something to entertain you for a while
also look for thicker legs esp. if you have another of the same type to compare, I have never heard of a rainbow chick though, bet it will be pretty!
I only got 1 of the Rainbow... I also have 2 Barred Rocks and 3 Rhode Island reds.... I havent found a lot of information on the Rainbows but here is a pic of one full grown..
And the one I have does seem to be the leader of the other 5..,... I am soooo hoping it isnt a Roo ... will have to find him a new home if it is,,,,, I have read that they are really big meaty birds.... If I would have done a little more research I would have found out that i should have purchased pullets instead of straight run chicks... Live and learn!!!
when you get experinced (well actually people can just always tell) theres something about chicks, the way they look or act or something, can just scream boy or girl, just an opinion of people LOL
I'm brand new to chicks too - and I can tell you that we have NOT had very good luck with picking out chicks. We have 4 bantams - straight run - and I'm pretty sure 3 are roos. We picked 4 out of the "Mixed Pullet" box and I'm fairly confident that 1 (maybe 2 are roos). So out of 8 chicks we've got 4 maybe 5 roos and only 3-4 hens!! NOT GOOD!!
Dixie Rainbow are from S & G Poultry. No two birds have the same color pattern. Dual purpose bird, I believe the original intent of them was broiler but if you read old threads here they say it lacked consistency of weights and the Rangers were a better choice for ranging meat bird. Others that kept hens for layers were satisfied with production.
