Hi all! I purchased 5 baby hens almost a month ago from our local urban farm store, and one (our favorite black australorp, Violet) is sprouting long tail feathers (see images). Any of you able to help me tell if she's actually a Rooster? If so, she'll need a new home, since rooster aren't allowed in our city, and we'll be so sad...we just adore her....(him?!) Help!

Long tail feathers at this age do not indicate sex. Cockerels develop male pattern feathering later, at around three to four months old. Before that sexing is based on comb and wattle size and redness. The black chicken seems to be a pullet, but it is best to judge comb and wattles at around 6 weeks to be more sure.

Thanks!!

That there is a rooster. Disposition, stature, and feathering. Black Australorps have always been one of my favorites. I breed them and just imported another line from Ontario. Lots of experience with the breed.
