So we've had this animal for over a year now. And believed it to be a hen but it was with several other hens and so I really don't know if it's been laying or not. Recently its coop mate was attacked by a dog and had to be put down and ever since then it has been crowing like a rooster. And never before that instance?

that’s a rooster, a barred rock it looks like. Maybe seeing the hen attacked triggered something In him? Or maybe it was just a coincidence that the hen dying and the cock crowing happened at the same time.

It's a hen. Possibly a cuckoo Marans, or a mix. Do you know how old she is? It's possible she has reached "henopause" and that could be the reason for crowing, or it could be due to the loss of her coopmate.

Looks like you have yourself a nice looking hen. Now yes, the comb may be peculiarly large for a hen... But she does not have hackle feathers or the right tail for a rooster. And breed wise, I'd say Barred Rock. Good luck and God bless.
