Is this normal behavior for an orpington in winter? Last time she layed an egg is October 7 or so, and then she stopped and never laid a single egg again. She hatched on April 1 of this year and was laying steadily since the end of august. Starting at least a month or so she's been a bit puffed but always eating, drinking and doing chicken stuff normally. Now that it's winter she is one of the only ones in the flock who almost constantly stands on one leg. I have another pullet, a 24 week old amberlinks who's not laying yet, who also does this. I read that tucking her leg under her belly fluff means she's cold, but I haven't seen my other hens other than these two doing that, even though those hens are considered less hardy breeds. I'll attach some pictures. And again other than the puffing she acts like a chicken and has no other signs of potential sickness.

She does seem a bit thin in the breast area compared to my Brahma but around the same thinness as my BR who went full broody in September (she should have gained back her normal weight by now, right? I didn't really weigh them before.). My other hens are slightly puffed too. I read that they puff when they're cold? Because all of them are not acting cold. But they don't seem to know that it's much warmer in the hen house where they sleep at night 🤷🏻‍♀️. Also I felt Orpington's crop and it's nice and full but not squishy/watery. Also not a single bloody/watery poop under the roosting bars.

Is it always the same foot that she stands on? Any sign of a limp or favoring one leg when she walks/runs?

And what are you feeding the flock again? (I can’t keep track🤪)

They are on 20% Dumor chick starter grower (basically the same as Purina all flock just a lot cheaper) with egg shells as a supplement. I can't tell if it's the same foot she stands on but she doesn't limp.

Just this morning I noticed most of my hens were now a bit puffed up and standing on one leg. It was -5 Celsius with a lot of wind so I think they might be cold. I brought them some very warm water and they loved it.

She’s got plenty of floof, but maybe she’s just more sensitive to the temp.

My Buff likes to spend time in a nesting box (not broody), although I think it’s at least partly to escape minor flock drama.

Lol my chickens always huddle inside the hen house whenever I'm not looking.

We have two younger pullets, not yet laying (waiting for more daylight, I imagine), and when Buffy goes in to lay, they follow her and sit on the roosts about six inches away, staring.

Reminds me of having toddlers and unable to ever, ever pee in peace! 🚽
