Hi everyone! I’m in a little bit of a panic rn so I’ll keep this brief. I hatched three chicks under a broody hen the other day. Today I went out and saw she left the nest and the chicks were huddled together for warmth. I put her back in and she stood on one of the chicks necks and wouldn’t get off!! (Chick is ok! I moved her off of it) Idk if it was on purpose or not, but she wouldn’t let them back under her either, I had to put them in myself. They’re only like two days old, I’m thinking of borrowing a brooder plate off a friend and taking them in myself. Is this a good idea, or will I make her more upset? She’s raised a clutch before and was an amazing mother, so I’m a bit conflicted.

How did this work out? I'm having a similar situation right now. I had a broody hen so decided to get some new day-old chicks for her to raise (I don't have a rooster). My last broody hen was a wonderful mother and this method worked well for me. This hen didn't warm up as quickly to her chicks as my last hen did. The last hen immediately accepted the chicks, but this hen seemed scared of them and chased them away. Within thirty minutes, she was sitting on her new checks and making her motherly clucking noises. All seemed fine. About two hours later, I saw she had ahold of one of the chicks and was thrashing it about. The chick tried to get back under her, but she seemed to be rejecting it. I tried to rescue the chick, but momma resisted my interference. This short confrontation allowed the rejected chick to slip underneath her and rejoin the siblings. She sat back on the baby chicks and currently all seems fine but I'm keeping a close eye. I have a camera in the coop so its easy for me to check on things. Is this normal? She was very aggressive with the little chick that was peeping in terror.
