Hen & Roo Combinations

OK, now I'm leaning back to 3 roos, seeing what happens, and being ready to send one to freezer camp - does that sound like a good idea?

If I could get hubby to build another enclosure of some sort, I could rotate them out. Have to catch him in a good mood...

OK - I'm going to post a different question, too - THANKS!

well, I've heard about RIR roos being mean and really, I only have "met" one RIR roo...and yes, he was not nice at all. I'm sure there are nice ones out there but from my brief experience, I'd rather go with a different type of roo if given a choice.

Currently, my chickens are all young. I have 4 roos. 3 of them are 3 1/2 months old, EE roos and the other is 2 1/2 months, a buff wyandotte. They're all pretty nice roos. I'm going to build a chicken tractor (bachelor pad) for the 4 of them and just keep them all separate. I guess that if I want to hatch some chicks, I can just build a little bungalo for the "lovebirds" and see what happens

So anyway, I think I'd go with the BO and the EE, but that's my opinion.

One of our roos is an RIR. I call him Notus (god of the south wind). He's very good with the hens, but I don't trust him. About once per 5-6 weeks he has to test me. He gives up an attack fairly easily when cuffed aside with a foot. But I never turn my back on him.

Notus is the only RIR roo I have any experience with. LOL...guess he kinda fits the RIR reputation. I keep him around to breed RIR hens and to make sexlinks with BR & Delaware hens. If something happened to him, we'd raise and keep another. We sell alot of chicks and POL pullets - gotta have an RIR roo. (An NHR roo would accomplish the sexlinks, but that breed is not as popular as the RIRs.)
