Hen seems dizzy/off balance/can't hardly stand

Thanks eggessive for the link to the mareks information page. Finally had time to read it thru. Super informative but I am still unsure if that is what my hen has. There r so many other things that can mimic mareks. I will continue to treat other possibilities and hope for the best. I will post with any updates. Thanks everyone!

You're welcome. It would be very strange to have this one chick from a hatchery come up with Mareks after all that time on your property with no other cases. Hopefully no other chicken people have been on your property that could have exposed them.

Also, I was thinking you should check her feet for duck-foot. Most likely, she doesn't have duck-foot but it is possible. Duck-foot is where the fourth toe, which is normally carried in the back of the foot, is carried forward either by a simple bad habit or it is permanent. Duck-foot can create being unbalanced and mild discomfort.

Well, my hen is about the same today that she was yesterday. Still laying an egg each day which seems so crazy because she looks so weak. Still giving her extra vitamins in the form of crushed Vit B Complex and also 3 drops of Polyvisol and also added extra calcium today too.
Thanks for the suggestion of duck-foot but that doesn't seem to be the problem either.

Oh, okay. Well, the guess was worth a try. That's funny that she would be laying, most sickly hens are too stressed and sick to lay.

Unfortunately our hen died today. She continued to get worse each day eating less and less and finally today she couldn't hang on any longer. She continued to lay an egg each day which still seems amazing to me considering her worsening condition.

For those of you who have personally seen and experienced Mareks...... when the description says paralyzed legs/wings....does that mean they truly are paralyzed, as in couldn't use them at all/had no control over them? She could still use both her legs and wings. She sort of pushed herself around in circles. Could that still be Mareks? She just seemed very weak and continued to get worse. Still trying to determine what the issue was. I don't think it was any sort of vitamin deficiency since I gave her supplements each day. Any more info would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I probably should have recommended a necrospy by the state vet to test for Mareks. Most states offer this with a samll fee, some are free, and some are much higher. If it's not too late a refrigerated body can be shipped on ice or dry ice. he number for the Wisconsin state vet is 608-224-4872.

I have a second hen with the same thing ! First one has died and second one is getting there. It’s the weekend but I only have three other hens so need to find out what it is and is it contagious!? I’m devastated but somewhat relieved that it’s not just my hens! Thank you
