hen spur removal

I have a hen that has a spur curving upward to her bootie. I want to remove it so roosting will be more comfortable for her.
Could someone more experienced give me more details on the potato method. I don't want to hurt her.
I read to pierce hot potato with spur and twist off. Is it really that simple? How long does potato stay on the spur? Is it painful for hen?
What is it about a hot potato that gives way to a very hard thick spur?
