One of my Production Reds has a spur that has increased in size a lot recently. She only has the spur on one leg.

I have no experience with this-- anything I should do? Will it continue to grow? Will it become sharp like a roosters?

Thank you for your help!

Yes, Sometimes hens have spurs. Shouldn't be a problem.

After I read a thread about hens with spurs I started looking at our pullets. Most of them have little nubs where spurs would be. They are only 25 weeks right now, so I don't know how big the spurs will get, but some of them are a little pointy! I read somewhere else that Hamburg hens commonly have small spurs, more so than other breeds. I think they're cute.

Our wellie hen has 1.5" spurs and they are sharp, but that's as long as they have ever gotten and she is going on 3 years old in July. She's got nothing on our roo, but none of our other hens have them.

Last time I noticed, only my game hens had spurs, the longest about 1/2" long and not very pointy. They do use them to flog me when they have chicks and I mess with them.

Ok thank you everyone. I may try to remove it if it gets sharp!
