Hen started crowing.

Not a hen. He's also a rooster, he has saddle feathers, and he was probably too afraid to crow before with the head rooster around.

But they had totally different combs and always looked different as soon as they got a month old

Different birds grow at different rates, and there's variation even within a breed. I promise you that you have another rooster there. Also, dominant roosters can suppress testosterone/development of other males.

That's 100% a cockerel. He is now crowing because you have removed the dominant male.
