Hen Terrified of Rooster; Behavior Advice or Good Chicken Recipe Sought...

Many very young rooster only think about mating and dominance, not about looking after and caring for the hens.

Many grow up to be great roosters after some time separated out. Some of mine can take up to two years before they are suddenly great roosters, some are that way right away and some are just interested in mating and aren't worth stressing the hens with, and aren't worth keeping around.

Young roosters have not established themselves in the chicken world yet so they take every slight and insult the flock gives them personally.

This is basically what oldhen is telling you. Once your rooster has got to the top of your flock he will in most cases chill out.
I'm afraid he'll kill her before he realizes his *ss is already there!! He attacked her and chased her out of the coop and by the time I got around, she was laying on the ground on her side and he was standing over her with his mouth full of feathers. He's getting separation time from inside the coop tonight. He can roost his nasty teenage $*%^#*% attitude in the covered run!! DONE.

He really doesn't sound like he's worth keeping. I'm all for giving them a chance, but I think the overall health and welfare of the flock is more important than that of one nasty bird.

I just don't understand...it's just the ONE hen. The rest follow him around like he's a god. And why he attacks her when she's just sitting on the roost??

I've been reading up and in my mind i'm shouting (Cull him Cull him Cull him!) I had a rooster (cockerel) Just like yours i absolutely HATED! He'd chase all of our hens and pull their tail, head, and back feather out! I had just got outside in the morning to see him beating up one of our lowest in ranking hens and unfortunately she didn't make it. I was so mad i swear i chased him down for about a half an hour before i had finally manged to catch him and straight to the cone he went! Didn't even eat him thats how much i hate him, But my garden seems to love him ;) A bad rooster is a bad rooster and i would cull him right away. If you want a rooster for protection or just to be there I would suggest to try and find a free mature rooster somewhere locally on craigslist. Theres always one a free rooster ad on there

Hard to know what goes on in the mind of a chicken... But you may want to think about which bird you'd rather keep. The way it's going now is no quality of life for her.

@MillersFarm I'm afraid you're probably right, but for some dumb reason, I can't just say "off with his head," straight away. I fought my husband to keep him when my husband wanted him gone, so maybe that's it. However, I'm not going to allow him to bully one of my girls, possibly to death.

Like what Bobbi-j said, Its either the rooster or the hen. And really you don't need a rooster for protection so hes just for looks. You could try giving him away but I dont think anyone would want an aggressive rooster (Unless they use him for cock fighting) I personally think the best way to go is to cull but that's what i think. It's all really up to YOU and what You want to do with him.
