I have a Barred Plymouth Rock hen about two years old that has always been a good layer and still is. This last week she began to crow every morning. She sounds like a young rooster, but clearly a rooster. Is this a common occurrence?

Not common, but it does happen enough that it gets mentioned fairly often here.

I had a GLW Hen that crowed occasionally. It was very sporadic for a couple years.

Ive had a few hens over the years that crowed..... Was funny to watch. Sometimes as hens get older they get more male hormones and act somewhat like roos... Crowing. ..being aggressive and mounting hens. Some will crow if all of a sudden they are roosterless. Typically it is only for a short time. I have a little bantam Phoneix hen that has all of a sudden got a larger redder comb and has been fighting with the roos and criwing to the best of her ability. She is a she... Shes four years old and has raised babies...... Lol

I've got an eleven week old who decided to crow this morning! This IS a hen, right? I don't see any saddle feathers at all.
She does have kind of a deeper, scratchy voice. And, she goes toe to toe with a sibling we suspect might be a Roo.
We live in the city. If she keeps this up, she is going to be relocated to my friend's farm.

OK Great I am not CRAZY? So I also am experiencing this. I have a hen 3 months old that was a extra add in to my black stars from the hatchery. I know black stars would all be hens. But this hen ? has started to crow. We have a lot of wild roosters that hang around. Friends what I have read is that only roosters crow. But I read differently here. Can't tell visually yet.

Mine ended up being a roo. While I've read that a hen can take on "rooster" behavior, the crowing is really rare. He has been relocated to a farm. :(

Yes! This morning I heard what sounded like a young roo's practice crow. Sure enough it was a hen named Broody Trudy who is, as you can tell by her name, a layer and a brooder. I wondered if she was tring to reply to my rooster, Sal. They were sitting on the same branch. Funny!! I am so glad there are other chicken lovers who are delighted and amazed by chicken behavior. Thanks!
