Today my hen is still moving around pretty well. She is no longer the boss of the coup, she has slipped back a notch to last in the pecking order now. Her crop is still puffed up, no eggs from her, and still rolling her head around while swallowing. I’ve been giving her bread and milk and also getting some diluted garlic juice into her. I don’t think she is on deaths door but she has been unwell for quite a few weeks now. I haven’t noticed her vomiting anymore thank god!
Beautifulbirds, she is a very friendly bird and even flew part way to come see me last night! So she can’t be doing that bad aye. I think it’s an infected crop or sore throat personally and I’m hoping the garlic will fix her up. Wait and see I guess. Thanks for your advice too.

Talked to my vet.. here is what he said

Thrush is very common in poultry and this sounds like (with out seeing the bird) Thrush..
It is caused by a fungus called Kandita, and humans can get it, but not likly.
You will need an oral drug that is for humans, you will need a script if in the US (your not) so your vet would have to call it in.. I don't know your laws..
The drug is called Nystatin, and is given orally for 2-3 weeks.
It is somewhat contagous to other birds and he said to quarinten her untill she is off the medication.
Thrush is caused by the enviroment, or contaminated feed.
copper sulphate is also a cure.
My wonderful vet even gave a link you can go to for more info.

Just seen your post rgarding a drug recommendation. I have to say that without actually seeing the bird it is actually dangerous to 'guess' a condition and then a remedy, which is why I recommended the garlic - it's natural, and therefore safe. Garlic is a strong 'cure-all' for chooks and can be used for a wide range of problems in many animals. It is strong and effective.

I agree, however that is not possible in this case. My vet did assue me that this medication can not be harmful. Hes a good doc.. and If I called him about my own chickens and this is what he said.. I would do it.
No Im not a blind newbie farmer either.. and your advice is good advice.. however .. if it was me.. I would do it.. and that is why I posted it.

FAir enough but I can't agree with you. Chooks become delicate when sick and there are too many possibilities to consider.

I just checked that link and either I wasn't looking in the right places or the chicken and poultry link wasn't working well - I got a choice of lots of chicken recipes and an offer to buy the book of answers for $45.....

Doug, my vet gave me that link over the phone.. you may want to check my spelling.. collage did not teach me to spell.. or try a google for it? but if he said its there.. its there. My guess is it is hiding behind my poor spelling.

My hen is doing well! she even laid an egg yesterday! Her crop is still puffed up (not as bad tho) and she still jerks her head/neck around when swallowing. beautifulbirds, I’m still giving her the garlic water.
iajewel maybe it would be best if I call a vet locally and ask about Nystatin?
