I have a BO girl who has been fighting bumblefoot all Spring/Summer. On Monday, we unwrapped her foot, the area where we removed the infection from is healing nicely and looks pretty good. We re-treated with Hydro. Peroxide and neosporin and rewrapped it. I am still concerned about her though....her comb is lighter in color than the other girls and she is a bit lethargic. Goes outside when i let everyone free range, but doesnt hang with the flock. Last night at roosting time, she was under the steps going up to my back deck. i had to pick her up and carry her to the coop. As I said, the bumblefoot issue appears to be getting better, but she isnt acting right. Should I be giving her vitamins? Special diet? Anything I can do to help her feel better...? Thanks for any advise

Does she feel thin, or lighter than the others? If so, you might try giving her some bread soaked in a mushed up egg. The extra energy would likely do her some good. Anything with a high fat content is good when they need extra energy.

Also, I'd quit using the peroxide at this stage. It can lengthen the healing time, and is not needed when the infection is cleared up.

I would give separate her from the others for a few days. Give her access to water and feed and some treats so she can build her self up again. She may be getting picked on by the other birds and wants to stay away from them or her foot might really hurt. I would give 2 drops twice per day of Poly Vi Sol baby vitamins (WITHOUT IRON) try CVS or other store. When my girls aren't feeling just right I give them scrambled egg mixed with cottage cheese. Scramble the eggs, cool them them mix with cottage cheese. About 1/2 and 1/2. Give her a tablespoon of the mixture twice a day.

Does she feel warmer than usual? I believe a chickens normal temp is 106 degrees. The foot might be healing but the infection can still be growing inside. She might need antibiotics but I would consult a Vet for that. I don't believe in giving antibiotics unless necessary and you know what type of germ is causing the infection. Keep her quiet and away from noise for a day or 2. She just might need TLC and some time to recuperate.
