Hen with crusty flaky feet..

My oldest hen, about 2 years old has developed very thickly and unevenly scaly feet. They have uneven big scaly ridges which look like they would peel off if you tried, (but they are actually pretty stiff). The feet are dry, pale and and look flaky.

I looked up fungal infections of chicken feet and all I can find is things like bumblefoot, where there are sores on the fleshy underside of the foot. But nothing like this.

Does this need to be treated? What can I use if so?

Something like that is usually scaley leg mites. Look it up. The cure is coating the legs and feet with any kind of oil from WD 40 to used motor oil, or even Vasoline. Oil the roost also as the mites hide in the cracks. Treat every bird.......Pop

I deffinitely agree with Lollipop, your describing it perfectly. Make sure you coat the roost thickly with oil so it gets in all the cracks in the wood where mites can hide. You could also try putting 1/4 teaspoon of copper sulfate per gallon of drinking water which supposedly kills internal and external parasites, I saw that on homesteadingtoday.com . Good luck.
