Here we go...I noticed a few days ago that one of our Buff Orp hens had her right eye closed, and since it was in the middle of the day, I thought it was rather odd, but didn't give that much thought to it. (Also, she was taking a nap later that day, which again, I didn't really give a lot of thought to. But thinking about it now, none of the other chickens were napping. I guess she didn't feel good and wanted to sleep. This probably should have been my first clue. Duh.) Then, the day before yesterday, I noticed that her eye was still closed. So now I thought I should really be watching her to see if she was ok. It was hard for her to eat because her eye was shut. (She actually kept missing the piece of corn she was trying to pick up...it was horribly pathetic, and frankly, I felt terrible for her.) So I picked her up to look at her eye, but I didn't really see anything wrong with it. There was no bumps or redness. I could see part of her eyeball, because her eyelids were just slightly open, and it looked fine. This morning tho, she's turning her head up to the left. It's like she's trying to see out of the eye that's closed by turning it towards the ground. (Again, it's her right eye that's shut...it's getting confusing, I know, I'm sorry.) So I picked her up again, only this time, I can see that there's some kind of film between her eyelids covering her eye. I'm really not sure what to do now. Would a warm, damp cloth be a good idea? I'm open to suggestions. She's not eating properly, (I think mainly because it's hard for her to see what she's doing.) and she seems very "ho hum," she just kind of stands there staring up at me. All I can think of is that she's probably thinking, "My eye hurts, can you please help me?" I feel absolutely terrible! If you have any suggestions, they would be GREATLY appreciated right now. Thanks.

I'm not an expert and there are much more experienced people on this site but would applying an opthalmologic ointment be appropriate? When one of my hens had an injured eye, I used an ointment that seemed to be a form of neosporin. I think you can get it at the feed store.
