Hi everyone. I have a hen who I suspect has impacted crop. She is jerking her head to the left a lot, and I know that means she’s trying to adjust her crop. It’s about golf ball size, a bit larger than that, and it’s pretty hard. It’s usually like that at the end of the day but she doesn’t often jerk her head. Any thoughts? I can try to upload a video if you need

The neck jerk is a give-away that a chicken has an uncomfortable crop. The hard material very likely could be impacted. The treatment is simple enough. Stuff some chilled coconut oil into her beak, let her swallow about a teaspoon of it and then massage her crop lump until you feel it soften and break up. You can safely use more oil as needed, along with more massage to get the material to all break up and go down.

Treated early, more serious complications such as gizzard impaction and yeast infection can be avoided.

Thanks, I’ll try to get some coconut oil! She seems to be doing better now but I just wanna make sure :)
