Three days ago I noticed my hen was roosting out side the coop in the sick hen stance with her tail down, but I’ve been checking her and her comb and eyes look good, I checked her crop and she’s not bloated. I’ve been be try busy and leaving before light so I haven’t seen if she’s eating pellets but she’s been eating corn when I put it out. Last night when I put the birds to bed I noticed that you could hear hear breathing hard and while she was breathing she was making noises. It’s still happening this morning but I still can’t find anything else wrong with her, what should I do?

Sorry to hear about your hen. Just to clarify, this is a chicken or turkey? As I type, I’m assuming chicken, but your name has turkey in it, so I want to be clear :) when was the last time this hen laid an egg and have you checked her well for lice and mites? How does her abdomen feel? Is it bulgy or distended?

Also does she show any signs of respiratory illness such as discharge from the eyes, nose, mouth? Any facial swelling? Any reports of avian influenza in your area?

Sorry for the confusion, she is a chicken I’ll make sure to clarify in the future for sure. I’m not sure when she last laid an egg but I know it hasn’t been more than two weeks. The flock was last checked for mites a couple weeks ago, they should be clear but I will check again to be sure. Her abdomen is not bulgy or distended. My flock mycoplasma, but she’s not showing any signs like fluid around the nose or eyes or sneezing just the breathing, I’ve been checking her crop, abdomen, comb, and eyes everyday nothing has changed. I don’t know of any reports of avian influenza in my area

I’m terribly sorry, I didn’t get a chance to sit down and get a reply typed out. Is there a chance this is the mycoplasma in your flock resurfacing? How would you normally treat that, with Tylosin? Has there been stressful events that would trigger mycoplasma symptoms to recur? Do you have Tylosin on hand to treat her if you’re suspecting MG?

It can be tough to pin point respiratory symptoms down to a cause. Is anyone else in your flock showing symptoms? It might be best to separate her if you haven’t already so as to not infect anyone else incase it isn’t MG.

It could be the mg resurfacing with symptoms I haven’t seen yet. The only thing I have is tylosin that expired this year, I haven’t gotten a chance to get more yet. Should I treat her with it anyways, it’s only expired this year?

Let’s ask some of the educators what they think. @Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive

If she were mine, I don’t think I’d have any problem using an expired medication, but a better option is vet care, do you have a vet available to treat or give you an updated medication?

I can get an updated medication but I will takes weeks to arrive as I’m far from any post offices, and vet care is a last resort for my family right now. Unless it’s a health risk I wouldn’t mind using the medication I have if it has even a chance of helping.

I would use the expired tylosin 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days in case she is having MG symptoms. Is there any sign of bubbles or foam in either eye? Can you tell if she has an enlarged lower belly under the vent? That can be a sign of water belly which can cause labored breathing.

Ok I’ll use the tylosin, she doesn’t have bubbly or foamy eyes, and she’s doesn’t have an enlarged under belly, I’ve been checking her daily because I’ve had a hen with water belly. I can’t currently fully seperate her and don’t see how much it could do after almost a week of symptoms but I can’t set up a temporary pen in my coop where she can’t get controlled food and medication and peace from the others
