Hi! I have this silkie hen and I noticed about two weeks ago that she had a severe limp and extreme swelling. I took her out and she’s been living in an old dog kennel. She eats and drinks fine and there has been no blood in her poop. Recently she’s been able to put some weight on it but still struggles to lift her foot up and doesn’t seem to have a lot of control over it. When I had treated her with bumblefoot I noticed the area was covered in yellow bruises and what seemed to be blisters. I have also checked and she doesn’t have any other signs of Mareks. The swelling is still really bad and i’m concerned she may have broken it or have nerve damage. When I touch it she doesn’t seem to be in any pain just uncomfortable. Has anyone ever had this problem before or know what it might be?
(a vet has also been notified and I’m waiting for them to get back with an appointment date)

can you post photos and a video
here’s a video of her walking
it’s hard to see the swelling since she’s pretty fluffy but you can see where she stalls a little before walking
if you need any close up photos let me know!

it does look hip or leg related, rather than a persistent bumblefoot/foot infection for example. Just wanted to rule out something easy to treat.

Is taking her to a vet an option?

Can you identify and splint the broken bit?

I clutching at straws. Tbh I think she needs to be put out of her misery

A vet has been notified and i’m just waiting to hear back. I’ve done some research and it doesn’t seem to be broken as she is comfortable with me touching it. Thank you for your help and hopefully there will be a solution.

I hope you manage to sort it. Poor little chicken 😔

Sometimes they can get pretty bad strains or sprains from jumping off the roost, chair, etc. my baby dixie had a bad sprain from a high jump and it went away eventually. I tried to keep her in the run during recovery so she wouldn’t have to run from hawks free ranging. I hope that’s all your little silkie has... :hugs I don’t think she would be able to put any weight on a broken bone. Have you looked into any of these chicken sling chairs to give her leg some occasional rest?
