Hi! :) Unfortunately, I have just discovered that my White Leghorn hen, Mary Poppins, is suffering from prolapse. Her vent area is unusually dirty (it has been pouring the rain all day and she was foraging in a muddy area.)
The only thing that I have to give her in this situation is Tums, Nutri-Drench, Vetericyn, and Vaseline. I have to be somewhere this evening (I will be back at 8:00 pm or so) so can her treatment wait a couple of hours? She is asleep on the roosting perch right now, so I figured it could wait.

So let me see if I have the treatment straight:
Isolate her, clean her vent area and apply Vaseline, and spray with Vetericyn? I will also give her some Tums and Nutri-Drench is necessary.

Thanks so much in advance! :)

The other hens may peck at her vent if they see the red prolapsed tissue. I would probably stick her in a wire dog crate or pen with food and water. The red tissue needs to be kept moist with any of these items: honey, hydrocortisone cream, prepartion H, veg oil, plain neosporin, etc. if the prolapse gets dried out the tissue can become necrotic or die. Try to puch the prolapse back inside and hold it there (wear a rubber glove.) Many times it will need to be pushed back in if it comes out. A daily warm bath can keep the area clean. It is important to note if there is an egg inside, and that she is pooping okay. Pictures of the prolapse can be helpful. Stuff like this never happens at a convenient time, does it? I'm so sorry.
:hugs
I think you are suppose to push it back in after you clean her.
Epsom salt warm bath soak.

Thank you :hugs
Okay, I gave her a bath in some warm water with Epsom salts added. I then put some Vaseline on a finger of my glove and did my best to push it back in. It took an hour or so, and even after I held it inside it would come back out. It did stay in all night and this morning, but it is back out this afternoon (not as extreme, though).

I have been spraying Vetericyn on her vent this morning. She is alert, and actually pretty curious, but it won't stay in :hmm

Thanks! :) I will try again, it just won't stay in. I held it there for 25+ minutes last night and it finally stayed in. But it's back out again.

I had a hen with a prolapse last year. I did everything you already are but I use Preparation H instead of vaseline when pushing it back it. I should help reduce some of the swelling. It took me 3 days of baths and pushing it back it for it to stay.

Thank you! Okay, I guess I'll just keep up the pushing.
