Hello. New here. I have a hen with a very red swollen read end - see photo. We had chicken mites a few weeks ago and got rid of them I think with DE and Permethrin spray. I checked and poled her vent and it seems moist and not clogged. The red swollen part seems squishy and seems to hurt when I press on it. She also has some missing feathers on her back, which I how we knew we had mites. This part is a lot better then before. I have her separated now so I can see if she's eating drinking and laying. She seems strong and healthy otherwise. Any suggestions on what she may have and what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a rooster? Aggressive hen?
What's their diet?
We do have a rooster who keeps them in line. We feed them non GMO layer mash, kitchen scraps, and they free range - mostly grass, berries, weeds. Thanks for your help.

Is he overbreeding her? Roosters shouldn't eat layer feed, so I'd switch to an all flock or chicken feed, it will also have better protein for your girls. They could be pecking her for protein.

I'll keep her separated for a few days and see if it clears up. Thanks for the tip on the feed. I didn't know I had to feed non layer feed if I had a rooster. I appreciate the response and help.

My hen has been separated for a few days. She's eating and drinking. Not positive if she's laying. There were eggs in her quarantine, but one day there were two so maybe other hens are squeezing in somehow. Rooster def hasn't been in there. He's too big.
Her red rump is no better. Anything else I should do or ideas what else it could be?

Many thanks.

Apply Nu-Stock to the effected area. In addition to the mites causing previous irritation to her rear end, urates in feces will scald the rear end causing feather/fluff loss, redness, swelling, pain and irritation...much like a bad sunburn.
When applying Nu-Stock, shake the tube well and wear disposable gloves when applying it. It will also prevent feather picking. Feathers and fluff will eventually regrow.
Nu-Stock can be found in the Equine section at a feed store. thnustock.jpg
