Hi BYC, I need some advice to see if I’m going about treating my hen correctly to try to heal her eye.

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) -

2) What is the behavior, exactly. Behavior is normal, eating drinking and interacting with her flock.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? Only noticed a few days ago.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. None that I can see.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. I have no idea.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Yes.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. slightly runny.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? So far I have been washing it with saline solution and applying neosporin. I bought terramycin today and will switch to that.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Hoping to treat myself.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. See attached.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use. They have wood chips in their run and chopped straw in their coop.

Her eye is covered by a thick white membrane, possibly scar tissue or dried pus. This must have been going on for some time. She may have signs of a respiratory disease or she could have been pecked in the eye, or got something stuck in it. I would try to use QTips and whatever needed to get the white film off the eyeball. Sometimes the eye can be lost with an eye infection.

Thank you, I have tried pressing around the eye to see if anything would come out but now that I know the white is not part of her eye I will work a little more to try to get that out. The white on her eye showed up a few days ago but she may have had a respiratory infection before that.

Other than the terramycin should I be supplementing with anything?

If you think she may behave MG, a respiratory disease, treating with an antibiotic such as Tylosin in her water may help treat symptoms.
