I have a hen (black sex linked I think) that has a bit of an overgrown beak that is now split. It looks like she has two points at the end of her top beak instead of one.

Can I try to clip the beak with dog nail clippers?

She is not eating and was just beginning to lay a couple of weeks ago. She has been laying really big eggs (about the size of my palm; I can post a picture of the egg if needed) Could she be egg bound?

How can I help her so I don't lose her? She is starting to lose weight.

click on search enter split beak it should bring up about 10 other threads that address split beaks, was just gonna copy the address, but more than one

P.S. what kind of corgis?? we have red pembroke

I went ahead and trimmed her beak with some fingernail clippers and got her to take a sip of water. I am boiling some eggs and hopefully will get her to eat those. If not I am not sure what else to try.

This type of injury is painful and this is most assuredly why she is not eating.... yes you can trim it but from previous posts on split beaks , they are usually not "cured" by trimming and continue to split..." super glue has noxious fumes and will not "glue" the split beak together > it needs to be filled with dental resins > an avian vet will be acquainted with this problem and be able to help you.

do you have a dremel /dremel type device to gently sand any rough edges? (I would not use a hand file as this probably would make the split worse)...

I do have a dremil. There is still some overhang on the sides but she did at least eat some egg today. I let her go back with the flock this evening and will continue to give her special care.

A picture of the before and after would help. I have had split beaks just seem to happen out of no where. I found it the beak is cut / filed back so the split is totally gone it will not come back. Once cut back if needed I file the beak to shape like it would normally be.
