One of our hens has spots that have grown quite long. I want to trim them, but am trying to figure out the best way. Should I clip them with dog nail clippers? Should soak them or stick a warm potato on them and try to gently pull the outer part of the spur off? Other ideas all together?

I'm looking for advice. We don't have a rooster, so we are not used to maintenance on long spurs.

Are they long enough to interfere with her activities?
Pics might help here.

So might this:

Hello @aart. I need to get pics. I forgot to take some while I was out there today. I'll go back later and take some pics. They are pretty long, likely longer than those in the pics of the thread you linked. I think they interfere with her ability to roost properly, which could lead to frostbite on her feet in these cold temps we have at her, especially at night. She walks fine though.

Not the best photo... She wasn't cooperating.

I have a hen with similar spurs...maybe longer... I have never done anything about them...

Have you watched her roost?

I don't think mine have any issues with their spurs.... but of course the way they curve can greatly impact if they are a problem or not....
