We bought a Cochin hen from a guy about 3 weeks ago. I like the term "saved" better. When we got her, her eyes were swollen. He said she had been pecked. But I see no wounds. So after examining further, we noticed her legs/feet were swollen too. She has no cough, no eye or nasal discharge, no other symptoms at all really. Maybe a little diarrhea. She's eating and acting normal. We quarantined her with another hen we bought from this guy, and she hasn't taken on any symptoms. Seems perfectly fine. So we put tetracycline in their water for 5 days. No change. We've started spraying her legs to treat for mites the last 2 days. But that wouldn't explain the swollen eyes right? I've searched all over the Internet and can't find anything that explains this! Maybe she's just old? We don't want to put her down unless that's the last option! Thanks! Here's some pictures that might help

I'll bet that bird has gout. You rescued it? I'll bet regular feed and regular watering was non-existent? A dehydrated bird will develop gout. If it doesn't kill the bird outright, the bird can develop gout. Aside from this, I know little about treating the condition. I only recognized the (potential) signs from some old posts I read here several years back. I've never actually seen the condition in real life. You can use the search feature here to investigate. There is at least one amazingly informative article somewhere in the archives. I'll try to track it down...

If it's not gout,I will guess that this might be MS, or mycoplasma synoviae, which is a contagious respiratory disease similar to CRD that spreads through the bones and joints. Sometimes there is a blister on the chest from lying down. Since it is a carrier disease, I would get the chicken tested, and probably cull if it is positive. Drugs such as Tylan50 injections, Gallimycin, and chlortetracycline can treat symptoms, but testing needs to be done before treating or they may not be accurate. There is probably also scaly leg mite which vaseline should take care of in a few weeks of application. Here are a couple of links for you to read: http://www.thepoultrysite.com/diseaseinfo/99/mycoplasma-synoviae-infection-ms-infectious-synovitis
