Rockin' Reds :

Update: Nugget is doing beautifully.

She has learned to eat all by her little self and I am no longer having to syringe feed her...YAY Nugget!!

Resilient little girl isn't she?

I weigh her daily and she gains every day...we are on the other side of 4 pounds! The beak is starting to go through some changes...can't tell if there is new growth underneath pushing it off or what, but it looks different where the break is. It's still firmly stuck with no wiggle whatsoever, so that's good.

I am letting her out each evening to play with her sisters, and so far so good. I apparently didn't learn my lesson last time.

but I do watch her pretty closely when she is outside. Anyway, just wanted to give an update and I will try to get pics up tomorrow so I can get everyone's thoughts on what the beak looks like. Sometimes it's hard to tell when you inspect it 30 times a day.

Sorry it took so long to get updated pics (see original post). Had a fox attack my older girls on Friday and kill 3...bad weekend. Anyway, here are pics I took of lil miss Nugget this morning. She is still doing very well and gaining weight like a champ. I don't really notice any difference in the angle of the break nor do I see any new growth. I was wondering what you all thought...opinions please.

Thanks so much!! Old pics on the left, new on the right.

Really really rough weekend....bold jerk (I think there were 2 foxes) did it when I was out there too...not more than a 100 feet away, at 4:30 in the afternoon!! It took me about 45 seconds to haul butt over there and in that short period of time he had killed 3, including my favorite, Bessie.

I really miss her.

Anyway, do you notice anything different with Nugget's beak? I mean, it's a lot cleaner obviously but I really don't know if I can see much difference other than that. I'm probably just really impatient, plus I look at it a gazillion times a day. ha ha. What do you think?

OH POO rockenreds, the pictures didn't come thru to me....

it may just be the glue or whatever but the beak looks very sturdy and strong. plus it helps that that piece sticking out is gone.

im sorry about your favorite hen

i was so upset when i lost Agnes to the worms. She was one of my favorites also. She was also the top hen but was incredibly sweet to the other girls. Everything still seems really different without her

DUH.....

I agree with Aubry, it is a small change BUT for the better. Not quite as "scissor" beak looking now. Keep lovin her and spoiling her...she is on the road to recovery............

Maybe just give it some more time. Nugget's beak, underneath, looks healthy and still living, not necrotic. If the underlying tissue were to succumb to necrosis it should have by now. It's hard to tell... can you peek 'into' the break and see if the entire beak or just the outer horny shell is broken sideways? Kua has started healing, after some mishaps. I wrote about it here, because I didn't want to take over your thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=556859&p=3
