ARRRRGGGHH!!! So mad at myself right now. I have been letting Nugget out in the backyard for exercise in the evenings for the last several days. She has always seemed pretty contented, but tonight she flew over the fence and ran over to her coop. I felt so sorry for her that I thought it would be okay for her to hang with her sisters for an hour or so and then I would go get her and bring her in for evening meal and bed. Well....I went out to get her and she has a bloody spot where the break is. I am furious at myself for letting her in there...I just felt so sorry for her because she wanted to be with her sisters so badly. Bad mama!!

Anyway, no real damage done I don't think...beak is still firmly glued, just a small wound opening. She ate her syringe supper like usual and some egg from her dish. Lesson learned...unfortunately the hard way, like I learn most lessons.

She played my emotions big time. Trying to be stronger than a chicken is hard!! Ha ha.

Epoxy or tar of some sort would be your best bet. You wanna stick that thing on because it doesnt grow back like a fingernail. Im sure some people have seen hens bred for egg producing; their top beaks are clipped when they are born. This is to prevent pecking in the cages, but i dont think thats what you want! Just remember that having it come off would be worse for her than the pain of putting it back on.

My vet said it would grow back as it was broken by the nostrils. I have heard both... it won't grow back and it will grow back. Hopefully it will. I guess time will tell.

The beak is still intact although very crossed at this point.

Your a good chicken mamma. We all seem to learn the hard way.

Hope she keeps doing well and I love the updates. This will be very interested to see if her beak grows back.

Update: Nugget is doing beautifully.

She has learned to eat all by her little self and I am no longer having to syringe feed her...YAY Nugget!!

Resilient little girl isn't she?

I weigh her daily and she gains every day...we are on the other side of 4 pounds! The beak is starting to go through some changes...can't tell if there is new growth underneath pushing it off or what, but it looks different where the break is. It's still firmly stuck with no wiggle whatsoever, so that's good.

I am letting her out each evening to play with her sisters, and so far so good. I apparently didn't learn my lesson last time.

but I do watch her pretty closely when she is outside. Anyway, just wanted to give an update and I will try to get pics up tomorrow so I can get everyone's thoughts on what the beak looks like. Sometimes it's hard to tell when you inspect it 30 times a day.
