Just to preface, this is not urgent as far as I know, my hen acts and appears healthy aside from the following issue! She hasn’t laid eggs in a while, but she is a senior so I assume her laying time is over.

My hen has had an excessively runny vent, which I cleaned a couple weeks ago because it was extremely matted. It didn’t look like vent gleet at all, no skin irritation and no unusual discharge, aside from the discharge being almost entirely black. However it came back again a few days ago, and while I cleaned I noticed an almost sick smell that I can’t describe, and found a yellowish scab directly under her vent. I lost a hen a while back to cancer around the vent so I want to make sure that she’s alright. Thanks for any pointers!

Do you have photos?

If you are finding a black discharge with a yellow scab under the vent, you may want to give her another good cleanup, remove as much debris as possible. Take note if you see any maggots.

To me this sounds like FlyStrike. If so, soak in some soapy water, pick off and rinse off as many maggots as possible. Coat the wound with ointment or oil. Repeat soaking/cleaning a few times a day until there are not more maggots.
