I have a hen that I found with a very swollen comb. looks like she either cut it and it got infected or pehaps it's an abscess coming out. She was her normal self - I've since separated her and she's not very happy about it but I don't want one of the roosters to mess with her.

I've been cleaning it and applying bag balm to keep the skin soft.

I know I should be giving her antibiotics, I just don't know what - and my supply is limited here in NH without going to an exotic vet.

I have Tylan Injectable (but I really don't like needles and would prefer something I can give orally)...

I'm going to give it a good cleaning tonight with betadine/water (I have to be very careful as it can easily drip into her eyes) and see if I can keep getting the swelling down... It's going down - but slowly!

You can give tylan 50 injectable orally...I think 1/4 cc to 1/2 cc per day for 3-5 days.

I've used it orally before...works great! Tylan is more for respiratory diseases, I believe. There are also more general antibiotics available in water-soluble forms at petsmart (Ornacycline is tetracycline based) for small pet birds. Just need to buy more of them and dissolve them in the water for 3-5 days.
