Well, if there is swelling, it certainly would seem that extending his legs would help it dissipate and keeping them bent underneath him all the time would inhibit circulation. At least, that's my theory. It may not be a magic pill, but I think it'd have to help some in getting circulation back in those legs and feet. And it was tested and he's able to poop with no problem at all, too! As long as the material doesn't stretch out too badly, it should be just what the doc ordered. Well, Nurse Lynn ordered, LOL.
He can touch his legs on the ground at that height. DH wanted to put some minor weight on them so they would have to extend down, but that would be tricky, getting just the right amt of weight. Just them hanging is an improvement and from there, we can move them for him in a very slow bicycling motion, if need be.
Lynn, what percentage of the day do you think he should be in that sling? Should he sleep in it, or be out of it at night?
Wow, Cyn, I'm not really sure....are there any rehab nurses out there?
I think you should be around to check on him while he is in it, and shift him slightly every hour or two to prevent pressure point problems. I would have him out of it at night, because you can't be around to monitor him. Maybe you could increase the amount of time he is in it each day and just take it day by day.
Hopefully he will start trying to stand up and put some weight on his feet. If that happens, it won't be such a worry, he will be relieving the pressure himself. Since we don't know exactly what the injury is, it is going to be a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants therapeutic intervention, LOL.
By now, you can probably read him pretty well. You may be able to tell if he is getting too tired or needs a break from it. Maybe others will have some additional ideas!
I to would worry about the pressure points and sores from it. Shift him while he is in it and take him out at night. Judge by what he is doing and how he seems.
