henny1129's Chat Thread! Anyone welcome!

Hi Abbey, how are you? I'm completely out of layer crumbles. I have to go and get some from TSC today or tomorrow. They ate the last of it last night. How are your hens? Has it cooled down in Ohio yet? Not here, but its very fallish looking, just not "fallish feeling" lol

BTW, what do you like to do for a hobby (besides chicken keeping)? What kind of music do you like? I like classic 1940's-50's music.

Well, bye for now!

Hello! I'm doing very well, besides some frustrating math homework! And I'm so excited for fall! It's the beginning of kidding season for goats and we might be getting more soon so it's super exciting! Thanks for asking! :hugs How are you? Lol, we were just about out of chicken food too, but my mom went to get some more today while my brother and I were at school. :) And we're headed down to our goat feed supplier to get goat feed this weekend. The hens are doing pretty well, we've recently changed their feed, and I'm soooo glad because they're all starting to gain weight and not feeling so bony. Fortunately it's started to cool down, not much but it's nice and windy and it feels so good! :D We went into Walmart today and there was so much fall "thingys" and it made me happy to know fall is right around the corner! Falls my favorite season! ;)

4-H is a very large part of my life and I'm pretty involved in it, but right now, being so soon after Fair, 4-H just kinda takes a rest so I don't have much to do. I enjoy reading, biking, and in the Spring picking Morel mushrooms. And of course learning about animals and spending time with them. :) I'm kinda a country music junky! My favorite artists are Old Dominion, Eric Church, Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, and Chris Young. :P Right at the beginning of the summer my mom, brother, cousin, aunt, and good family friend went to a Kenny Chesney and Old Dominion concert and it was SOOOO awesome!

Sorry for so much writing, lol! I don't mind the questions either, so don't feel bad if you ask a lot! :) Hope to talk to you later! :frow

Cool! No, that's not a lot of writing. I love talking!

Math homework? I love math! Yes fall!! I love fall, it hasn't cooled down much where I'm at but it looks gorgeous outside! Kidding season! Awesome, hope you get some more goats!
My dad got some layer feed, cracked corn, and pine shavings yesterday so the chickens have more feed. I haven't been to Walmart in awhile so I haven't seen the fallish stuff yet. Sounds exciting though!! Fall is my favorite season too!

I love 4-h too! We just recently bought some pullets from a 4-h chicken auction. I love them! I like country too. But my favorite music is stuff like, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, The Andrew sisters, Dean Martin, Jimmy Durante, Louis Armstrong, Dinah Shore, etc.

Ok, that's good, I enjoy talking too! :) Yeah, we have math homework every night, but it's on the computer so I think the technology part makes it worse! It does look gorgeous outside! I hope I get more goats too, they're so fun. :D All the utensils needed for chickens! :P It definitely makes me excited, fall is the best!

That's neat! Cool, I've never listened to any of them before but I have heard of a few, mainly Frank Sinatra. :)

Talk to ya later!

Can I ask a HUGE favor of all you guys? So, Elliot, one of my beloved goats, has an abscess on his "cheek". When it pops (soon, is my guess) it can easily get infected and bad bacteria can get in it and cause a very bad illness. While we're trying what we can to keep him clean and make sure when the abscess pops we know and keep that clean too, I'm still asking you all to pray. Thank you so much and I'll keep you all updated! :hugs We called the vet and will be making an appointment on Monday since they are closed on the weekends. Thanks so much again!

I will be praying Abbey! :hugs

Thanks! :hugs

This is a text I just sent to my cousin as an update so if I just modify it a bit it'll be good for you guys!

We called our breeder (Randy) and he said to just pop the abscess, and he gets these sort of things all the time. He said if what comes out is watery pus then he's fine, but if it's yellow, stringy, cheesy looking pus he has CL (bad bacteria). So we went out and poor, poor Elliot. We did what Randy told us to do which involved cutting the abscess with a razor blade (not the kind you use for shaving

) and other things I won't mention through text cuz it's gross

Anyways, sadly what came out was the yellow, stringy, cheesy pus, I was pretty much having a mental breakdown thinking he would die. So we texted Randy who always has good advice cuz he's been around goats for a very long time! He said that having CL is fine, just get all the pus out and clean it up nice and good and put him back in with Boog and he will live a very long, happy life!

Thank goodness because I was FREAKING out! We wanted to keep him safe for the night though so we put him in his own stall and Boog in another stall. But, some cheesy pus was still coming out and neither my mom or I could feel good knowing some pus was still coming out, so we went back to the barn and got ALL the pus out and cleaned him up real good. Well, we come back to the barn (because we went outside to do the cleaning) and Boog had jumped out of his stall and was having a good old time exploring!! So we put Boog back in his stall. By the end of this Elliot was basically having a mental shutdown because of how tired and in pain he was, so we just poured some comfy shavings in his stall and left him. The story continues........Finally we are sitting inside relaxing when we here a very much to close to the house Boog baah.

My mom and I head back outside and walk into the barn and are greeted by an out of his stall Boog. A thorough investigation must be done and see how he's getting out. A while later we find he's using his water hook to jump out, okay, take it out and by then we are so exhausted we just put Boog with Elliot and let them be together because in the end that's what they wanted! But just to be sure Mr. Boog doesn't escape again we wait outside the barn and listen. He's loudly baahing and won't be quiet, and then we remember! We forgot their small evening snack consisting of a little grain. So I run to the garage and get some and pour it into a dish for them and finally they are now quiet and hopefully sleeping!

Hey everyone! I really hope someone is on right now because I have some questions about a kitten that was left in our front yard.

So, like I said, we found a baby kitten (from looking at diagrams I would think 3-4 weeks old, but please correct me if I'm wrong) in our front yard right by the road. It's been raining here all day so you can imagine he's (I'll just call it a he) very cold. We do have a pet carrier so we put him in that with some clean towels to warm him up. He seems to have warmed up and he is taking a nap right now, and he's not dead, I keep checking on him and he is breathing and moving. :) There seems to be little white flakes in his fur and a few brown bugs crawling on his skin, so I'm guessing these are fleas or mites? My mom used to be a Vet Tech a long time ago so she said that the best thing to do is get him warmed up and then give him a flea bath. Should we give him any flea medication? I read you can give them some but I'm not sure if it's safe for a kitten his age..... Also, we're going to get him milk replacer and some kitten food, so does anyone have any suggestions on how much to feed him? And his gums are pale, is he dehydrated or could this be something else or simply from being cold? Sorry for so many questions, but my family's more of chicken/dog/goat people, not very cat knowledgable!

Here's a pic and I'll try to get more soon:

Aww, he's soo cute!!!!!
The white flakes are probably from lice, (when our cat was a kitten he was very slickly and had lice, the little white flakes). You can probably just google "how to get of parasites on a a 3-4 week old kitten.)

And about the dehydration you could google dehydration in cats, or just google the pale gums part. But yes, I would give him a warm flea bath. Again, he's too cute!
