Hens and Ashes

Burned leaf piles are always fair game in my yard, old or new. They love the ash-laden dirt! I was just watching my turkey hens today dusting in a spot that has some old, broken down leaves, thinking that looked fun.

All my chickens were dusting in the sun today, digging various holes in their pens. Today was a fine day to bathe!

HI all, I have a dirt area for my girls to play in, Well after reading the post I went out and put a pile of ashes out of the fireplace (thinking I was giving them great fun) They made a new hole right next to the ashes and will not even step foot in the ashes???Silly girls!! We are having a wonderful day SUNNY and about 60 degrees they are all in the dirt but not is the ashes go figure.

My dh uses cardboard/newspaper, etc. to start the fire in our wood burning furnace...and has for years....he also puts the ashes on the icy driveway and on my plants in the yard. At first I freaked out as I was sure he was going to kill my daylillies as he covered them with ashes!!

Low and behold the lillies seem to love the ashes and did extremely well with them. The chickens find the ashes wherever he puts them and roll in them and they love it. No ill effects at all.

I know people in town that use the wood stove pellets for small animal bedding, i'm sure they are safe
