I am new to chickens and I am wanting to learn as much as I can. We just got two hens that I am not sure how old they are. We got one good egg and one soft shell egg three days ago and nothing since. I do not know what is causing this but I am worried about them. Any help would be wonderful.

It sometimes take a few weeks for hens to adjust to a new environment and begin laying regularly. Keep them calm, give them a good layer mixture, be sure they have access to oyster shells, and you'll see more eggs soon.

I also have a new hen, she is a yearling and not laying for me either! I know this can be frustrating but give them lots of love, they love spinach, and I have heard putting golf balls in the nests sometimes tricks them into laying an egg

Do you have any pictures of them you can post? Perhaps someone can give you an age estimate on them. Did you get them at an auction or poultry sale? Unfortunately sometimes people sell their hens when they are older and egg production drops off. Hopefully yours are young and just getting started!

to everyone! Thank you for your help. I got them from a guy who sells both chicks and laying hens. I knew nothing and let my son pick what he wanted. I have heard some not great things about this guy since so we will see. I will get some pics soon and see what you all think. Thanks again.

Sometimes they need an adjustment period. This includes to a change in feed. If you haven't I would go to the public library and check out every book on Chickens/Poultry. You will learn alot. I never get tired of saying this. There are two very good poultry magazines. Back Yard Poultry and Practical Poultry. Practical Poultry being the best, though it is expensive.
I will admit to being fanatical about chickens. NO ONE SHOULD GET CHICKENS W/O SOME RESEARCH.
