Hiya all, i have 2 hens called Henrietta and Harriot. They started laying in Feb this year. They live with my 3 ducks called Daffy, Daphne and Delylah. They get on well with each other. But at Easter, i got my daughter 2 baby chicks only 1 week old. They stayed indoors for a while but are now fully feathered and quite big. I started to introduce them to the others, who roam the garden and live in my shed, through chicken wire. So that they would get used to each other. Then i removed it. But my small chicks wont leave the shed at all, cos they are scared of my male duck. Understandable, but they all locked in together at nite. The small ones roosting up high. I also saw Henrietta chase one round shed yesterday, just after i fed them, going for the chick crumb. How am i ever gonna get these 2 newcomers into my little flock and out on garden?they must surely be deprived of sunlight by now???

It will take time, but they will work it out. As long as they are not being injured and are getting enough feed and water, I would not intervene. Chicken society (the pecking order) is not kind.

the chicks have a right to be afraid of your male duck. Drakes frequently go after chickens to breed them- since their parts are different than for a chicken, they can even kill a pullet or hen thru attempted mating. If they were kept away from the chickens - the babies would have one less major stressor to deal with.

Maybe he is trying to mate Maisy???? Cos she is a white star, which is exactly the same colour as his 2 wives, Daphne and Delylah!
Oh my gosh, he is always at his 2 wives so he cud of mistaken maisy for a white duck?!! Can ducks see well? Or chickens??
