Hens and Roo digging large holes

Some chickens are terrible diggers. Mine have two areas they made dust baths. One is under corner of porch and other under an ornimental cedar tree. It was a surprise after I'd picked up two point of lay leghorns last fall and they were digging to China anywhere they pleased.

I'll be letting the leghorns go before I put in the garden this year. Terrible diggers that breed is.

Just watch their faces as they take a communal dustbath... surely I'm not the only one that thinks it looks like a feathered orgy?

My two roos are usually standing over them picking up whatever interesting tidbits they kick up onto each other...

Yeah, its about as natural as hens laying eggs and roosters crowing!!!

One day, I "caught"my dominant roo dust-bathing, all by himself. Normally, he stands guard, or he will occasionally dust bathe with one or two favorite hens. But this day, he was the only one in the front yard, laying there with that ecstatic expression, occasionally kicking like crazy and slowing down, then rolling over to kick dirt on his other side. A special, private moment of sheer enjoyment for the big guy.
