I was feeding my chickens laying mash until four weeks ago I got a rooster. After two weeks or so my hens started eating there on eggs. I didn't wing them off of laying mash I just stopped feeding it to them. Does anyone know why they would eat there own eggs?

No laying mash? Just curious, but why would you pull birds in production from it? Sounds like lack of calcium and/or protein in their diet and they are finding a way to get it.

When a chicken lays an egg, she rolls it around and checks it out with her beak. If the shell is weak, she will break the egg and eat it. Don't worry your rooster can eat layer pellets...

Sounds like they need more protien than they are getting, but that is the kind of habit that can be difficult or impossible to break.

Thanks for your help. I started them back on laying mash and now getting eggs again. Thanks again
