We have 8 RI Red hens; two or three have bald behinds; I noticed one is very thin on covering up front. What is it and what do I do?
Thanks.

Have you checked carefully for mites? Are there any feather pickers amongst them?

Are there any roosters among them? If so, the roosters will pull out the hind feathers in their zeal. If not, you might have a hen who is just plain mean and pulls out the other ladies' tail feathers!

Thanks for the replies.

No feather pickers; haven't seen any mites - not sure what they would look like, but haven't seen any on eggs or coop, etc., as I've heard described.

No roosters, all happy hens; aren't distressed.

How do I treat for mites?

Thanks.

Here's a link to pictures of mites and lice, just in case. Mine haven't had any, so I haven't seen them up close and personal. It's advised to check the vent area and under the wing areas first off for mites...
