Its over 104 in the high desert and my chickens are having a hard time. I spray the pen down every day. But Is it normal for them to make a loud chirping sound every once in a while. Their mouths are open and wings spread.i recently moved and it is very dusty. Could it be them panting so hard the vocal cords are making this sound Iam hearing? Iam working on making them a bigger coop to allow them to remain cooler.but i have noticed them doing this once in a while. I dont know if it is one in particular because i cant tell.they have no other symptoms. They eat well and are growing great. They're 5 in a half months old. Any info would be appreciated.

104 is certainly hot. There are a variety of things you can do to assist them during the hottest parts of the day. Frozen berries are great as are watermelon slices that have chilled in the refrigerator. Putting frozen water bottles in the water dish can also be an easy way to help them keep their temperature down. I am not sure if the sounds they are making are related to the heat but I am happy to offer advice on keeping them cool.
