Hens not laying

Hello! I own six chickens. My hens are approaching the age of 6 months but they aren't laying. My rooster, Smudge, is trying to mate with a hen that isn't laying. But his mother is and he's not trying to mate with her! What does this mean?

What breeds are they? Some breeds mature slower than others, and take longer to start laying.
If your rooster is trying to mount them, that means they are getting close to laying.

Some heritage breeds take long to lay.

If it's winter where you are, it could take longer since laying is connected to the amount of daylight.
Depending on your set up, your chickens could be stressed.
